Public Fishing Practical

Public fishing access at Tawakoni WMA is managed by TPWD

Part of Lake Tawakoni's shoreline cuts through the Tawakoni WMA, close enough that you can walk down and fish off the bank. A valid Texas fishing license and the rules posted at the WMA are all you need to wet a line — the state decides where and how you reach the water, and that's the whole arrangement.

The lake itself spreads across three counties and stays open to anyone, so you've got room. The state park on the southern shore keeps a boat launch if you'd rather put a hull in than stand on the bank. The WMA side is the unpredictable one: gates and seasonal closures move around from one year to the next, and a road that was wide open last spring can be chained shut this time around. Folks who don't check first end up parked at a locked gate, looking at the lake through a fence.
