Memorial Park Carries Camp Logan History in a Huge Urban Park

Before it was a park, this land was Camp Logan, a World War I Army training post on the west side of Houston. After the war the Hogg brothers, William and Mike, sons of former Texas governor James Hogg, bought the 1,503-acre tract and sold it to the City of Houston at cost, on the condition it become a park.

That is where the name comes from. The city set the park up in 1924 as a memorial to the soldiers who trained at Camp Logan and to the many who died in the war. So when you run the trails here, you are moving across ground with a real reason for its name, not green space that simply got a label.

It remains one of the largest urban parks in the country, with running loops, woods, and sports facilities used hard by Houstonians year-round. Trail work, parking, and entrances change, so check the official city and park pages before you go.
