Galveston Island State Park Lets Houston Trade Bayou Banks for Dunes

Just south of Harris County, one state park holds both sides of Galveston Island. Boardwalks cross dunes toward the Gulf, while the bay side opens into marsh, coves, and paddling water. Four miles of trails connect bird blinds, observation points, and the low habitats that make a barrier island feel different from Houston's wooded bayous.

You can camp on either the beach or bay side, fish from shore without a license, or launch a canoe or kayak. The park often reaches capacity, especially from spring through fall, so a day-pass or campsite reservation is worth making before the drive. Check the live park alert as well; wind, tides, and storm damage can temporarily close boardwalks or trails.
