George Bush Park Puts Big Recreation Inside Barker Reservoir
George Bush Park is one of the clearest examples of how west Harris County does double duty with its land. All 7,800 acres of it sit inside Barker Reservoir — a flood-control basin that stays mostly dry and serves as parkland until a big storm fills it.
On a normal day it is a sprawling recreation hub: fishing, dog parks, nature areas, ball fields, picnic spots, scout camping, an equestrian trail, playgrounds, a model-plane field, and 11.36 miles of hike-and-bike trail running over Buffalo Bayou.
For westside residents it is both a giant park and a reminder of the reservoir landscape they live next to. After heavy rain, parts can flood by design, so check Harris County Precinct 4 for hours, closures, and access before heading out.
