Old Longview Buildings Can Need Landmark Review

An older Longview building can carry two stories at once. One is what you see from the sidewalk. The other is the city review file. Local landmarks include the Longview Train Depot, the Rucker-Campbell House, the old municipal building and Central Fire Station, the Petroleum Building, the McWilliams Building, and more.

Those names are not just plaques. A local landmark, or a property inside a historic overlay district, is protected by city ordinance. Before work begins, the owner may need a Certificate of Appropriateness from Planning and Zoning.

That changes the repair rhythm. A roof, window, porch, storefront, or tear-down plan can be more than a normal permit. Check the address early. Then plan the work around the old brick, trim, porch line, or street face.

Longview's Historic Preservation Commission dates to 2011 and has seven city-appointed members. Its job is to protect places that show Longview's history, design, and culture. For a buyer, that can turn an old building from a mystery into a known set of rules. That is why some blocks keep their older face.
