Bayous / Waterways Stories & local character

Harris County Reads Like a Map of Bayous

Ask where someone lives in Harris County and a bayou often appears in the answer. Buffalo Bayou crosses the center of Houston. Brays bends past neighborhoods and institutions to the south. White Oak and Greens gather water from the north. Smaller creeks and channels branch from them like twigs from a trunk.

The Flood Control District tracks about 2,500 miles of bayous and channels, using a letter-and-number system tied to each watershed. Along some banks, trails and parks turn drainage corridors into everyday gathering places. The water still has a serious job: after heavy rain, use HCFCD's live maps and respect closures rather than treating a familiar trail as ordinary ground.
