Buying a Coastal Home? Check the Windstorm Certificate
The name on the certificate depends on when and how the work was checked. TDI gives a WPI-8 for new work or work still under way. It gives a WPI-8-E for finished work. TWIA gave WPI-8-C certificates only for applications from January 1, 2017, through May 31, 2020. Those older certificates are still valid.
Before closing, search TDI by address for a WPI-8 or WPI-8-E. Ask TWIA for a WPI-8-C from its 2017-2020 program. A certificate for the original house does not prove that a later roof, addition, or other covered improvement was certified.
If work was finished without a certificate, ask TDI about its route for finished work. Do not assume the home cannot qualify. A Texas engineer may need to check the work, and a few TWIA exceptions may apply.
