Wildfire is a real hazard in Throckmorton County
In February 2024, the governor included Throckmorton County in a wildfire disaster declaration. That does not mean every week is dangerous. It does mean wind, dry grass, and open ranch country belong on your home checklist.
Before you burn brush or use a burn barrel, check the current county burn ban status. Texas A&M Forest Service says county judges or commissioners courts can set burn bans when drought raises fire danger. The same page links to its statewide burn-ban map.
Look at insurance before you need it. TDI says home insurance can pay for fire damage, up to policy limits and after the deductible. If you are buying outside town, ask your agent how the policy treats smoke, extra living costs, fences, sheds, and vehicles.
