Throckmorton, Texas

Throckmorton is the county seat of Throckmorton County, in the rolling rangeland of West-Central Texas about 60 miles northeast of Abilene. The area has been cattle country since the open-range era, crossed in the 1870s and 1880s by the Great Western Trail that carried herds north toward Kansas railheads, and large historic operations such as the SMS Ranch built their holdings across the surrounding counties. The town remains a ranching center set amid wide expanses of native grassland.

Property here runs through the Throckmorton Central Appraisal District and the county tax office — the homestead exemption, the appraisal cap, protests, and any MUD, PID, or special districts all sit at the parcel level. The Throckmorton County notes below cover the practical details, with the official county directory for the appraisal district and tax office.
