Registering and Renewing Your Vehicle in Tarrant County

Renew online or by mail when your notice allows it. Tarrant County also has eight Tax Office locations. Grocery and other partner counters handle only a simple renewal. Bring the notice, proof of insurance, an ID, and payment. Use a county office if the account has a blocking remark or needs more than a sticker.

Most private cars no longer need a safety check. That rule began on January 1, 2025. Tarrant County still tests covered gas vehicles for emissions. Commercial vehicles still need a safety check. The windshield sticker shows registration; it does not prove that every type of inspection was done.

Online renewal opens 90 days before the sticker expires. It may stay open for up to 12 months after that if you have not received an expired-registration ticket. Your expiration month stays the same, so a late renewal does not buy a fresh 12 months.
