Registration Renewal
Some Montgomery County Renewals Work at Neighborhood Locations
You don't always have to drive to the Tax Office to renew your registration in Montgomery County. A set of neighborhood businesses, including courtesy booths tucked into some grocery stores, can process a routine renewal, which is handy if one of them is on your regular run for milk and eggs.
The shortcut only works for clean, simple renewals, and the fine print is specific: your current renewal notice, proof of liability insurance, a current inspection, no need for new plates, and a Montgomery County address. Title transfers and new-resident registrations are out. Those run through the county's own offices, never a grocery-store counter.
Run through the disqualifiers in your head before you swing by: has the registration been expired too long, does the vehicle need new plates, is the inspection current, is the address still in the county? If any one of those trips, the booth will turn you away, and you've spent a trip for nothing, so go straight to the Tax Office or follow TxDMV guidance instead.
