New Resident
New Montgomery County Residents: Register Within 30 Days
New to Montgomery County? The clock TxDMV sets is 30 days from your move to get a vehicle registered in Texas. That first-time registration runs on the Application for Texas Title and/or Registration, Form 130-U, handed in at the local county tax assessor-collector office.
Two county-specific things shape the visit. Montgomery is one of Texas's emissions-inspection counties, so the vehicle has to pass an emissions inspection before it can be registered. And the county processes new-resident registrations only at its county offices, not the grocery-store booths that handle routine renewals for people who already live here.
Pack it all in one bag and you make one trip: Form 130-U, proof of ownership, proof of Texas liability insurance, photo ID, and the inspection record. Show up missing the insurance card or the inspection and the counter sends you back for it, which is how a 30-minute errand turns into two afternoons.
