New Residents Skip the Safety Inspection — Just Register at the County Tax Office

Texas used to require two steps: a safety inspection, then registration. On January 1, 2025, the safety inspection ended for non-commercial vehicles. Lubbock County is not one of the 17 emissions-test counties. That means local drivers usually have no inspection stop before registration.

Register the vehicle with the Lubbock County Tax Office. The inspection-program replacement fee is collected when you register. If you just moved to Texas, you have 30 days to register your car. TxDMV keeps the current details.
