Buffalo Spring Lake Is the County's Close-In Lake Day
When Lubbock County wants a lake day without a long drive, Buffalo Spring Lake is the answer. The Texas Water Development Board places it about nine miles southeast of the city, tucked into the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River where the land breaks into canyon below the flat plains.
Unlike a state park or a distant Hill Country lake, this one is owned and operated by the Lubbock County Water Improvement District No. 1 specifically for recreation. The dam went in across 1958 and the finished project was accepted in July 1960, so generations of locals have come here to fish, camp, and cool off.
It's a useful thing to know if you're new to the area and figure the High Plains has no water. The nearest reservoir isn't hours away. It's a local district lake just southeast of town.
