Fort Bend renewals still include an emissions check

Texas ended yearly safety checks for most noncommercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. Commercial vehicles follow other rules. Fort Bend still requires an emissions test for covered vehicles.

In general, covered gas vehicles need a test from model year two through model year 24. Rental vehicles start at model year three. Diesel and electric-only vehicles do not take this test. Neither do motorcycles, registered antiques, and some other classes.

Use a station on the DPS list before renewal. The result is usually checked by computer when you renew online. Keep the Vehicle Inspection Report. A mailed renewal needs a copy, and an office may need it if the computer record is missing.
