The Trinity River and Flood Risk in Tarrant County

The Clear and West forks spilled into Fort Worth in 1949, killing 10 people and leaving more than 13,000 without homes. The disaster led to the 27-mile Fort Worth Floodway. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the levees, and the Tarrant Regional Water District operates and maintains them.

That history explains the broad green floodway along today's river, but it is not a promise about a particular address. Start a property check with FEMA's effective flood map, then ask the local floodplain office about permits and newer local studies.
