Brazos River

The Stephen F. Austin Paddling Trail Follows the Brazos

Inland Brazoria County is not all prairie and pavement. The Columbia Bottomland Waterway segment of the Stephen F. Austin Paddling Trail follows 8.3 miles of the Brazos River through dense Columbia Bottomland forest — a shaded, river-bottom paddle a world away from the Gulf beaches.

TPWD links this segment to three more Brazos River routes nearby: Old Settlement Passage, Sugar Mill Stretch, and Gulf Prairie Run. Strung together, they let paddlers piece a longer trip through the lower Brazos, past historic crossings and bottomland woods.

Check TPWD's trail page before you put in. It warns that river flow and water quality can shift quickly after rain, even rain that fell far upstream in the Brazos basin, so the river you scouted last week may not be the river you find today.
