Birding
Quintana Has a Bird Sanctuary by the Gulf
Most people drive through Quintana for the Gulf and never notice the trees. But the tiny coastal village holds a Neotropical Bird Sanctuary on Lamar Street, listed on TPWD's San Bernard Loop of the Great Texas Wildlife Trails. For songbirds crossing the Gulf in spring and fall, a patch of trees this close to the water is a first place to land.
It is a small, day-use-only stop (no overnight, no big visitor center), which is part of what makes it a good detour for a birder already heading to the beach or the San Bernard refuge.
Use TPWD's San Bernard Loop page before visiting to confirm directions, the day-use note, and what is being seen lately, rather than relying on an old tip or a fading memory of where the gate was.
