Register a Johnson County Well Before the Driller Starts
Prairielands covers Ellis, Hill, Johnson, and Somervell counties. Its current rules took effect August 17, 2026. A well drilled on or after April 1, 2011, must be registered. A new well needs district approval before drilling starts.
A new well that pumps no more than 17.36 gallons per minute may not need an operating permit. To qualify, its use must be limited to a home, livestock, or poultry. That does not waive the rules for registration, lot size, spacing, or how the well is built. Older wells may follow other date rules.
Call 817-556-2299 with the tract size, planned use, and pump capacity before signing a drilling contract. The district can confirm whether registration by itself is enough or whether the well also needs an operating permit.
