New Resident
New Fort Bend Residents Need Texas Vehicle Registration
Just moved to Fort Bend County from out of state? Texas gives you 30 days to register your vehicle here. You'll fill out Form 130-U and take it to the county tax assessor-collector office along with your title or other proof of ownership and proof of a Texas insurance policy.
Don't treat it as pure paperwork, though, because Fort Bend is an emissions-inspection county. Most gas vehicles need to pass an emissions test at a certified station first, and the registration won't go through without that on file. Knocking out the inspection before your tax-office visit saves a wasted trip.
A few situations need extra documents: a vehicle still under a loan or lease, a title from another country, or a name on the title that doesn't match your ID. If any of those apply to you, check the current TxDMV new-resident steps and confirm exactly what to bring before you make the drive to Richmond.
