The Lighthouse Trail Leads 2.8 Miles to Palo Duro's Symbol
The Lighthouse has its own marked point on the Palo Duro Canyon map at 34.9364, -101.6967. TPWD calls the rock formation the symbol of the state park, and the trail leading to it is the park's most popular route.
The listed hike is 2.8 miles one way, takes about two hours, and carries a moderate rating. Because that distance is one way, the return belongs in the day's plan too. This is a canyon hike measured in hours, not a quick stop at a rim overlook.
Popularity does not soften the heat. TPWD says most heat-related injuries and deaths involving people and pets happen on this trail. Its guidance is to carry at least one quart of water per person for every mile, plus extra water for pets. On the Lighthouse Trail, the water plan matters as much as the photograph.
