Texas Porch
Homestead Exemption Practical

A Jefferson County Homestead Exemption Starts with JCAD

To qualify, you must own part of the home and use it as your main home. You cannot claim a second home as your Texas homestead. JCAD's chief appraiser makes the call.

For tax year 2026, the school exemption is $140,000. An owner who is 65 or older or disabled may get another $60,000 school exemption. The county, city, or another local district may add its own tax break.

Apply with JCAD, not the tax office. The normal due date is before May 1. Some owners can still use a late or midyear filing path.

After approval, the exemption will often stay in place while you still qualify. JCAD may ask for a new form. You must report a change that affects your right to the exemption.
