Denton County still tests certain gasoline vehicles for emissions
Texas ended safety checks for noncommercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. Denton County still tests emissions. The rule usually covers gasoline vehicles from 2 through 24 model years old. Electric and diesel vehicles, motorcycles, and mopeds are exempt.
DPS runs the test program with TCEQ. A passing record is normally needed before renewal. Some owners can use an affidavit or may qualify for a waiver or more time. TCEQ explains those options. The DPS locator shows nearby certified test stations.
