Claiborne West Park Gives Orange County a Wooded I-10 Stop

Twelve miles west of Orange, Claiborne West Park gives I-10 a green break. The park covers 453 wooded acres and honors Claiborne West, a local figure tied to Texas independence. It has enough room to feel like a real woods stop, not just a roadside field.

The mix is broad. There is tennis, softball, disc golf, horseshoes, washers, a bike trail, camp sites, play areas, and picnic shelters tucked among the trees. The nature preserve has about five miles of walking trails, and the small pond gives the park a quiet center.

That gives Orange County a green middle ground between water, work, and errands. You can bring lunch, walk the preserve, or book a shelter for a family day without making it a major outing. The park office handles shelter bookings, and the camp sites give the place an overnight use too. The county also names it a wildlife and bird sanctuary, which fits the slow trail feel. Birders get a reason to linger. On a county page full of tax forms, storm maps, and permits, Claiborne West adds room to wander.
