Big Sandy Creek shifts from pine slopes to cypress sloughs

Big Sandy Creek Unit covers 14,343 acres in Polk County, south of U.S. 190 and west of U.S. 69/287. Small rises separate upland pine forest from beech-magnolia-loblolly slopes, floodplain woods, wet cypress sloughs, and dry sandylands. The variety sits inside one corner of Big Thicket National Preserve.

Three trailheads spread across the unit. Woodlands Trail begins on FM 1276, passes Collins Pond, crosses short bridges through a floodplain, and splits between hilly pine forest and a route beside Big Sandy Creek. Beaver Slide makes a shorter wooded loop near the creek.

Big Sandy Trail starts on Sunflower Road and follows old logging roads across gentle slopes. Those wide dirt tracks are a reminder that this backcountry was once worked as timberland. Across the unit, roots, muddy sections, bridges, and roadbeds turn the changes in woods and ground into something a person can feel underfoot.
