Freestone County Changes From Sandy Woods to River Bottom

Between the Navasota-draining southwest corner and the Trinity side, Freestone has more shape than a quick highway view shows. It covers 888 square miles of coastal plain upland, with ground that generally runs from about 600 to 900 feet above sea level. The land slopes in a quiet northwest-to-southeast way, so water, farm roads, and old settlement patterns all have a downhill logic.

That shows up in the trees. The west side carries mesquite. The eastern half has oak, hickory, walnut, and scattered pine groves along the Trinity side. Nearly all of the county drains to the Trinity River, while a smaller southwest piece drains toward the Navasota. Fine sandy loam and common springs in the deeper sand help explain why creek bottoms, old farm names, and back-road crossings matter here.
