White Rock Lake Gives Dallas an Urban Lake with Trails and Wildlife

White Rock Lake sits about five miles northeast of downtown, in East Dallas. Dallas Park and Recreation lists it as a 1,015-acre city lake wrapped by a 9.3-mile hike-and-bike trail, with piers, boat ramps, a kayak concession, and the Bath House Cultural Center on the east shore. On a clear weekend the loop fills with walkers, cyclists, rowers, and birders, and the quieter coves draw people who just want to watch herons work the shallows.

The lake started as city water infrastructure. City archive records show it began as a municipal reservoir before the surrounding land moved to the Park Board, which is why so much of central Dallas grew up around it.

For a resident, mover, or visitor, White Rock is one of the landmarks that anchors a whole side of the city: the trail, the neighborhoods around it, and the parkland all read off this one body of water. Check Dallas Parks for current access, events, and facility details before you go.
