VIN Inspection

Some title problems need a VTR-68-A inspection

Most title transfers are three signatures and a fee, done before lunch. Then there's the car whose vehicle identification number has to be assigned or reassigned (a kit car, a salvage rebuild, an import with a number that doesn't track), and the deal stalls until a Form VTR-68-A is in the file.

You can't just download that form and fill it in at the kitchen table. Appointments for it run through the Dallas County Sheriff's Department North Texas Auto Theft Task Force, and the only way to get a copy is through an entity authorized to complete it.

So when a VIN is missing, altered, or doesn't match the paperwork, that's the moment to slow down. Don't try to talk your way past the title counter. Set up the VTR-68-A appointment first, and keep your money in your pocket until the number checks out.
