Vehicle titles go to the county tax office; driver licenses go to DPS

Take vehicle title and registration work to the Houston County Tax Office at 401 E. Goliad Avenue, Suite 101, in Crockett. The counter renews tags, changes addresses, issues temporary tags, and handles disabled parking placards. Driver licenses and state ID cards are a separate DPS errand.

For a private sale, bring the signed and assigned title plus a completed Form 130-U. Also bring a government photo ID, the fees due, and an original lien release when one applies. You need proof of insurance when asking for title and registration together. A request for a title without registration does not need insurance. The buyer has 30 days from the sale date before late-transfer penalties may begin.

Texas ended safety checks for normal noncommercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. Houston County is outside the emissions program. Commercial vehicles still have an inspection rule. If a required inspection is missing from the state database, bring the Vehicle Inspection Report.

The Crockett office also handles titles for boats and outboard motors. As checked July 29, 2026, it posted a 4 p.m. cutoff for vehicle title transfers and boat or motor work. Call 936-544-3255 before driving over to confirm the day's hours. DPS uses appointments for driver licenses and ID cards.
