Registration renewals, title transfers, address changes, disabled placards, receipt copies, temporary registration — in Texas all of it runs through the county tax assessor-collector. In Hidalgo County that's the Motor Vehicle Department, the local office to start with.

You can renew online ahead of the expiration date, and you can keep renewing online after it lapses as long as you haven't picked up a citation. One bit of good news for drivers here: Hidalgo isn't among the 17 emissions counties, so there's no emissions test bolted onto a renewal.
