Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park Is Hidalgo County's Birding Anchor

Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, near Mission, is one of the reasons birders from around the country point their binoculars at Hidalgo County. Texas Parks and Wildlife says about 360 species of birds have been reported there, along with butterflies, javelinas, bobcats, and other wildlife in its woods and brush.

It is a quiet park by design. To protect the habitat, TPWD does not allow cars inside; you leave your vehicle at headquarters and explore on foot, by bike, or on a tram tour. Headquarters also serves as the home base of the World Birding Center network.

That car-free, trail-and-blind setup is a big part of why western Hidalgo County shows up so often in birding talk. Bentsen is a cornerstone of the county's public-facing nature identity.
