Vehicle Registration

No Inspection Line to Sit In Before You Register in Rusk County

If you moved to Rusk County from one of the big metros, the registration routine here is simpler than you're used to. As of January 1, 2025, Texas stopped requiring a safety inspection on most non-commercial vehicles before registration, so that whole errand is gone. In its place you'll see a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee folded into what you pay when you register.

Emissions testing is the part newcomers ask about, and the short answer is no. The state requires emissions tests only in a list of metro counties (the Dallas-Fort Worth ring, greater Houston, Austin, El Paso), and Rusk County isn't on it. So between no safety inspection and no emissions test, registration here is mostly the registration itself.

The Rusk County Tax Office handles it at 202 North Main in Henderson; the auto desk reaches at 903-657-0338, and renewals also run online and by mail. Commercial vehicles are a separate story, since they still carry inspection requirements, so if you're registering a work truck or anything with commercial plates, ask the office which rules land on your vehicle before you count yourself off the hook.
