Jefferson County Is Outside the Emissions Program

A normal car or light truck registered in Jefferson County does not need an emissions test. Texas now applies these tests in 17 named counties, and Jefferson is not one of them.

Since January 1, 2025, a noncommercial vehicle also does not need a state safety check before registration. A commercial vehicle still needs a safety check each year, no matter where it is registered.

You still need to renew the registration and pay the listed fees. Keep your liability insurance current. Your renewal notice will show which papers and payments are due for that vehicle.
