Gray County's noncommercial cars skip safety and emissions tests

Gray County does not require an annual safety or emissions inspection for a noncommercial passenger car or pickup. Texas ended safety inspections for noncommercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. Gray County is outside the emissions program.

A pickup can still count as commercial. DPS looks at weight, interstate use, passenger capacity, hazardous cargo, and school-bus service. If one of those may apply, check the commercial rules before renewal. A commercial vehicle still needs an inspection.

For an in-person renewal, bring the renewal notice and proof of current liability insurance. Lost the notice? TxDMV accepts the plate number, VIN, or prior-year registration receipt. It also says to bring a government photo ID when the notice is missing.

The Gray County Tax Office handles title and registration work at 205 N. Russell Street, Room 101, in Pampa. As checked July 30, 2026, its page posted cutoffs for title work: 4:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1:30 p.m. Friday. Those are not general office hours.
