Tyler State Park gives Smith County a piney lake anchor
Tyler State Park is the kind of place that makes Smith County feel like East Texas. Texas Parks and Wildlife describes a cool, 64-acre spring-fed lake ringed by 100-foot pines and historic structures, tucked into the woods a short drive north of the city.
There's a lot packed into it. TPWD lists boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, camping, bird watching, and nature study, with more than 13 miles of trails to spread it all out. A fishing pier and a boat ramp give you easy access to the water, where anglers go after crappie, perch, catfish, and bass.
For a new resident or a weekend visitor, it shows that the county isn't only Tyler streets and the bigger reservoirs nearby. It also has a shaded, walkable park built around pines and water. Check the TPWD page for current hours, camping reservations, and any closures before you go.
