How Vehicle Registration Works in Harris County

In Texas, you inspect first, then register. Pass your inspection, and the result is sent electronically to TxDMV. Then you renew your registration, whether online, by mail, or at the Harris County Tax Office. One sticker on your windshield shows both are current.

Harris County is in an emissions program area. As of January 1, 2025, Texas eliminated the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles statewide. In Harris County, the only required inspection is the emissions test, and there is no separate safety check. The Harris County Tax Office handles registration renewals.
