McLennan's Tornado Record Reaches Back to 1880
The National Weather Service's county tornado list starts in 1880. Spring is the main season for severe storms in Central Texas. Large hail, high wind, floods, and tornadoes are all possible. The 1953 Waco tornado is the clearest local example, but the long record is the reason to have a routine.
Pick an inside room on the lowest floor, away from windows, before a warning starts. McLennan County offers free emergency alerts. Phones with Wireless Emergency Alerts turned on may also get National Weather Service warnings. A strong safe room is worth thinking about when building or redoing a home.
