Start Residential Building Questions With the County Planning Office

Out past the city limits, lining up a contractor and a meter request isn't the whole job. The county's Planning Department is the practical first stop before residential construction in unincorporated Hidalgo County — it guides growth in those areas, reviews light and water certificates, checks site plans and setbacks, and coordinates the subdivision-rule work.

Which of those actually applies depends on the exact address. The county may review setbacks, floodplain status, septic, or subdivision plat notes before it clears any utility. A rural homesite can pass four of those checks and snag on the fifth, which is a far cheaper problem to find before the slab is poured than after.

Bring the legal description, the address or parcel number, and any plat or deed restrictions to the Permitting Division and book a permit appointment before work starts. The first thing to settle is whether a city, an ETJ, or a county rule controls your next step.
