Finish Your Marriage License With the County Clerk

You can start a Hidalgo County marriage license from your couch, since the application goes in online, but both people have to show up at the County Clerk's office in person within three days, or the application drops out of the queue and you start over.

Bring originals or certified copies to prove who you are. A driver's license, state ID, passport, military ID, birth certificate, citizenship document, resident alien card, border crossing card, or matricula consular all count, and both of you will need your social security numbers.

Here's the timing trap that catches people: the 72-hour waiting period runs from when the clerk issues the license, not from when you hit submit online. And a recent divorce can stack a second clock on top of that — its own waiting window that pushes the earliest wedding date further out than the 72 hours alone. Couples planning a tight ceremony date are the ones who get burned by counting from the wrong day.
