Bird Habitat

Paradise Pond Is a Two-Acre Birding Pocket Behind the Busy Island

Paradise Pond is small, which is exactly why it feels special. The two-acre habitat was dedicated in 2002 after birders helped steer prize money toward land behind a local motel.

The site has had to be restored and tended. Hurricane Harvey damaged the native black willow canopy, and hundreds of native trees and shrubs have been planted. A boardwalk crosses the pond, and a quarter-mile trail connects it toward Community Park.

The pond feels like recovery as much as preservation. It is not a grand landscape. It is a pocket of shade, water, and planted habitat that people had to choose to keep repairing.

Paradise Pond is a good little Nueces County lesson: not every coastal treasure is a huge beach or refuge. Sometimes it is a small shaded pocket, rescued from invasive plants and storm damage, where birds get cover and people get ten quiet minutes.
