Exemptions
Over-65 and Disabled Homeowners Get an Extra Exemption
A Lubbock County homestead can carry more than the basic homestead exemption. Homeowners who are 65 or older, or who qualify as disabled, can add a separate exemption on top of it. As of 2025 the additional school-tax exemption for these homeowners is $60,000 — confirm the current amounts with Lubbock Central Appraisal District, since the Legislature has been raising them.
You apply once with Lubbock CAD, in person or by returning the form and supporting documents by email, fax, or mail. The district is clear that there is never a fee to apply for an exemption, so any service that wants to charge you for the filing is selling you something the county does for free.
If you recently turned 65, became disabled, or bought a qualifying home, ask LCAD which form and proof apply to you. The exemption is recorded at the appraisal district before your tax bill is ever calculated, so getting it on file is what lowers the bill.
