Texas Porch
Septic Systems (OSSF) Practical

You need a permit to install or replace a septic system

Texas calls septic systems OSSFs. TCEQ says you need a permit and an approved plan to build, change, repair, extend, or operate one. A narrow exemption may apply.

That puts septic work early in a rural land deal. If a seller says the tract is ready for a house, ask which permit path applies. Leave time for the site review before dirt work starts.

If the tract is outside city sewer, find the local permit office before you count on a house site. TCEQ also points owners to choosing a system, permits, upkeep, approved products, complaints, and program contacts.
