Hidalgo County Is Not in the State Windstorm Insurance Zone

TWIA is the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. It is the state's backup insurer for hurricane and wind damage. It covers 14 coastal counties. Hidalgo County is not one of them.

That means private insurers are your only option for windstorm coverage. Most standard homeowners policies do not cover wind damage by default. You have to ask for it.

When you shop for homeowners insurance here, ask your agent about windstorm coverage directly. Find out what is covered. Find out what the deductible is. Find out what it costs. Having a policy does not mean wind is in it, so check rather than take it for granted.
