Just Moved to Grayson County? Two Clocks Start Ticking

The day you unload the truck in Sherman or Van Alstyne, two separate countdowns begin, and people trip up because they figure one office handles both. It doesn't. Your vehicle has to be registered in Texas within 30 days of the move, and that's a Grayson County Tax Office job. The main desk is at 100 W. Houston St. in Sherman, with a branch in Denison. Before you go, the car needs a Texas vehicle inspection (where one still applies) and proof of Texas liability insurance; you'll walk out with plates and a sticker.

Your driver license is the other clock, and it runs slower at 90 days, but it's a completely different building. Texas licenses come from the Department of Public Safety, not the county tax office, so that's a separate trip to a DPS driver license office. The two errands don't talk to each other.

Knock out registration first, since 30 days sneaks up faster than 90, then book the DPS visit. Insurance has to be in your name and a Texas policy before either one will go through.
