Old El Paso Stories & local character

Magoffin Is a Whole Historic District, Not Just One House

The Magoffin Home gets the postcard attention, but the nearby blocks carry their own story. The Magoffin Historic District covers 65 acres and has more than 200 buildings. The mix includes old houses, apartments, churches, small businesses, and the state historic site.

El Paso made Magoffin a local historic district in 1985. It joined the National Register in 2016. Those dates help explain why the area feels different from newer streets. It is still a living neighborhood, but the buildings and street pattern hold a lot of memory.

The walk also gives the big house a setting. You can see how an elite family home sat near smaller homes, churches, and shops. That scale is the joy of the district. It turns a famous house into a neighborhood story.

Walking it is history at house scale. The state's updated self-guided route takes about 90 minutes, with porches, walls, shopfronts, church doors, and family names in place of one big monument. The district is a connected neighborhood story, not a scatter of unrelated old buildings.
