A Barricade at a Guadalupe County Crossing Means Turn Around

A low crossing on a regular route can look familiar until water covers it. In January 2024, recent rain put several Guadalupe County roadblocks in place. Some drivers still went around the barricades. Floodwater can hide a washed-out roadbed, so a crossing on the daily drive deserves a backup route before the next storm.

Six inches is enough to change the drive. That much fast-moving water can cause loss of control, even in a pickup or SUV. At one foot, water can float many vehicles. Water depth is hard to judge from the driver's seat, and the road may be damaged underneath.

A barricade is not a suggestion. TxDOT lists a fine of up to $2,000 and up to 180 days in jail for driving around a barrier at a flooded road or low-water crossing.
