Two Familiar Highways Become Kleberg's Hurricane Routes

A hurricane plan in Kleberg County is also a road plan. The county's 2024 hazard plan names State Highways 141 and 285 as its two major hurricane evacuation routes. Highway 141 meets U.S. 77 east of Kingsville. Highway 285 begins in Riviera and also meets U.S. 77.

Those are ordinary roads most days, but the county plan adds an important caution. Flooding on either route during an evacuation could strand motorists. A route shown on a plan is useful, but it is not a promise that every stretch will stay open in heavy rain.

The calm move is to know which road serves your home before a warning arrives, then follow local evacuation instructions and current road conditions. Kleberg County is not a maze. Still, making the route decision early is much easier than making it after traffic builds or water reaches the pavement.
