Windstorm Insurance Is a Separate Policy in Kleberg County
On the coast, wind insurance can be its own chore. A Texas coast home policy might not cover wind and hail. TWIA is the backup market for that coverage in Kleberg County. TWIA lists Kleberg among the 14 first-tier coastal counties it serves. You still have to be turned down by a regular insurer before you can buy a TWIA policy.
Do not wait until a storm is on the map. TWIA will not sell a policy once a hurricane is in the Gulf of Mexico. A house or business also may need a windstorm certificate, called a WPI-8, WPI-8-E, or WPI-8-C. New work, roof work, additions, and repairs in the catastrophe area need to meet TDI windstorm standards if you want TWIA coverage.
For a Kleberg County house, ask your agent two plain questions. Does this policy include wind and hail? Is there already a windstorm certificate for the structure? That is easier than finding out after a claim.
