How to Apply for a Homestead Exemption in Tarrant County

Apply to TAD online, by mail, or at its office. You must own the home and use it as your main home. You also cannot claim another home as a homestead. The usual deadline is April 30. Still, ask TAD about a late filing or a filing made after a home purchase.

For 2026, the school homestead exemption is $140,000. Other local exemptions vary. If you buy after January 1, you may get the exemption for part of that year. This can happen when the prior owner did not get the same exemption.

The 10 percent value cap starts on January 1 of the tax year after you first qualify. The formula can also add the market value of new work on the home. TAD may ask for a new filing in some cases, so keep the approval notice and read any later request.
