Homestead Exemption Practical

Apply for Your Homestead Exemption at the Appraisal District

A homestead exemption reduces the portion of your home's value that gets taxed. State law requires school districts in Texas to grant a $140,000 homestead exemption on a residence homestead (Tax Code §11.13(b)). Property owners who are 65 or older or who have a disability may qualify for additional exemptions, and the mandatory school district add-on for that group is $60,000 (Tax Code §11.13(c)).

To claim the exemption, file an application with the Stonewall County Appraisal District at stonewallcad.org or call 940-989-3363. You will need a copy of your Texas driver's license or state ID showing the property address. The general deadline to file is April 30, but check the appraisal district site each year, since deadlines can shift. Late applications may still be accepted up to two years after the deadline.
